In the Spotlight: Gordon Simms

This month, Gordon Simms (1952-60) is in the spotlight.

Tell us about what you do now. Has your time at the school influenced your life today?

I am retired, since 2002, living in rural France. I spend much time gardening, reading and writing and have organised three bi-lingual Litfests and, for fifteen years, the Segora international writing competitions. I write poetry, plays and, most recently, Open Strings, a novella based on my childhood.

Tell us about your time at BMS. Do you have any special memories you would like to share?

My academic career was somewhat chequered, as an illness resulted in my missing six months’ schooling and, later on, repeating a year. However, my time at BMS was enriched by singing, both in school choirs and at St.Paul’s. The many concerts and services were uplifting.

As my health returned, one sporting moment to cherish was, not having played for any school team previously, making up the numbers for the first-ever game played by Bedford RUFC 3rd XV (Rovers). I touched down for the only score of the match against the school 2nd team and was rewarded by being selected for the school 3rds for one very muddy match which ended without score.

Who was someone from your time at BMS who had an impact on you and why?

Fred Rawlings was an inspiring choirmaster whose influence remains with me; while my subsequent career as a teacher, adviser and director was made possible by the salvaging job performed by Peter Hetherington.

What do you do like to do in your spare time?

I am a volunteer helper at a local art gallery and enjoy occasional film-going.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Whatever you undertake, give it your all.

Are there any other thoughts you would like to share with the OBM and BMS community?

Best wishes for continued development.
