In The Spotlight |
This month, Hannah Tyers (2013-18) is in the spotlight.
Tell us about what you do now. Has your time at the school influenced your life today?
I have been studying a part time degree in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management at Westminster University and working full-time for Walter Lilly gaining invaluable on-site experience. I have had the opportunity to work on the largest science project we have completed to date (£89m) and am now involved in a private residential project to construct a double basement for a 25m swimming pool and full renovation of the three other floors (£25m). I have also been given the additional role of Early Careers Scheme Coordinator to make the transition from school and university as smooth as possible. I also use my spare time to raise awareness for the effects that alcohol misuse can have on our own health and also those around us following the loss of my mum in December 2021. All of the staff at BMS have always been extremely supportive, ensuring that I strive for success in all areas and I was recently awarded high commendation in the Rising Star category at the National Construction Awards 2023. I have also won Trainee of the Year and Most Valued Business Contributor in my time here.
Tell us about your time at BMS. Do you have any special memories you would like to share?
I have always gone the extra mile to keep busy and this included sports and volunteering during my time at BMS. I have fond memories of the South Africa Hockey and Netball Tour and the general close knit community that BMS has. This is mirrored in my employment and Walter Lilly value the togetherness of their employees to strive for success.
Who was someone from your time at BMS who had an impact on you and why?
I was lucky enough to have support from all staff members at BMS who always saw my potential and gave me the confidence to succeed. From Mr Saunders in Year 9 English, through to Years 10 and 11 with Mr Fitton and Mrs Cordell. And of course Mrs Goodacre and Mr White throughout and following Sixth Form, allowing me to come back into school and share my experiences with pupils.
What do you do like to do in your spare time?
Most of my spare time is spent on holiday relaxing or spending time with family and friends. I am lucky enough to have a hybrid working timetable so I can always make my time work.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
People will forget what you did, people will forget what you said but they will never forget how you made them feel, make a positive impact on those that you meet along the way and you will be successful.
Are there any other thoughts you would like to share with the OBM and BMS community?
Bedford Modern School played a key part in making me the person I am today and I will be forever grateful for anyone that believed in me and allowed me to feel safe and supported through some of the hardest years, and continue to support my endeavours to use my experience losing my mum to help others know that they are not alone.
