John White Appointed as Development Manager

Bedford Modern School is pleased to announce the appointment of John White, from September 2026 as Development Manager, following more than 32 years of distinguished service to the School. John is widely known to our community for his longstanding and highly impactful tenure as Director of Sixth Form, a role in which he has shaped the aspirations and futures of countless young people.

During his time at BMS, John has witnessed first-hand the transformational effect of bursaries and the unique magic of a BMS education. It is this deep understanding - combined with his enduring relationships with generations of students, parents and OBMs - that he now brings to his new role.

As Development Manager, John will lead the School’s efforts to strengthen its philanthropic foundations and to secure income in support of our strategic priorities. This includes balancing the need for predictable bursary funding with a renewed focus on major gift growth for capital projects and the long-term ambition to build an endowment that will secure the School’s future for generations to come.

John’s work will sit in close partnership with Louise Whitcombe, Director of Admissions, Marketing and Communications, whose deep expertise in communication and strategic marketing will play a vital role in shaping our development programme. Together, they will form a strong and highly complementary partnership – working with and supported by Chloe Feeney, Alumni, Marketing and Events Executive – with a shared commitment to strengthening the future of BMS.

David Payne, Headmaster, Bedford Modern School commented:
“John’s contribution to Bedford Modern School over more than three decades has been exceptional. As Director of Sixth Form, he has guided and inspired countless students, and he understands the transformative power of opportunity better than anyone. His appointment marks an important moment as we look to build a culture of philanthropy that will sustain and enhance the School for years to come.”

Reflecting on his appointment, John said:
“Having spent my career helping young people realise their potential, I have seen just how life-changing a BMS education can be. I am honoured to take on this new role and to help ensure that even more students can benefit from the opportunities our School offers.”

As we look ahead, we remain deeply grateful for the partnership and generosity of our parents and OBMs. Your engagement will play an essential role as we seek to broaden access, enhance facilities and invest in the long-term strength of the School. John’s appointment represents an exciting step forward in this journey, and we look forward to working together in support of these ambitions.
